BioMed Central and the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN) are pleased to announce the launch of the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease. As the official journal of the CSN, the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease will focus on clinical, translational, and health services delivery research in the field of chronic kidney disease, dialysis, kidney transplantation, and organ donation. The journal will be led by Editor-in-Chief, Adeera Levin, Professor and Head, Division of Nephrology, at the University of British Columbia, with support from well-respected Deputy Editors, Associate Editors, and an international Editorial Board.
The journal’s mission will be to promote and advocate kidney health in both the national and international communities, and to achieve international reach, Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease will publish article abstracts in both English and French.
“The timing is right for a Canadian nephrology journal. Canadian nephrology administrators and researchers are highly prominent internationally and there is an unprecedented sense of internal and external collaboration in the Canadian kidney community presently,” said Adeera Levin (University of British Columbia), the journal’s Editor-in-Chief and current President Elect of the International Society of Nephrology. She went on to say: “We believe that established Canadian and international investigators, motivated by a sense of congruence with our mandate and ethos, will publish with us.”

The journal launches today with four articles. This includes an article from the Canadian Kidney Knowledge Translation and Generation Network reporting the results of a survey on the perceptions and opinions of physicians’ which may influence them when deciding to initiate dialysis. Those who responded followed evidence-based practice regarding the timing of dialysis initiation, knowledge gaps and areas of clinical uncertainty exist, suggesting unnecessary early dialysis initiation via formal policy and knowledge translation activities.
The Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editors and Associate Editors outline their vision for the journal in the launch editorial in which they say: “Through striving for excellence in the quality and relevance of published articles we aim to become a leading national and international nephrology journal. We consider it a privilege to be able to disseminate high quality work, to contribute as a community to that work, and ultimately to improve the lives of those living with kidney disease.”
