BioMedical Engineering and the Heart

Coronary Blood Flow, Myocardial Perfusion, Myocardial Ischemia and Infarcts Detection, Customized Stents and Bypass Surgery

Dhanjoo Ghista and Kelvin Wong

Stents and bypass surgeries have become standard treatment for ischemic heart disease, a top cause of death worldwide. This BioMedical Engineering OnLine thematic series addresses the urgent scientific and clinical need to further investigate the dynamics of blood flow, occluded arteries, and structural variations contributing to myocardial ischemic regions. Doing so will help to unveil the mechanism underlying this disease and inspire technological advances that will improve diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart diseases.

The series focuses on computational analysis of the engineering, medical, and surgical aspects of cardiology, and welcomes submissions from these disciplines.
