Endocrinology of reproduction and pregnancy

Guest Editors:

Panagiotis Drakopoulos MD, PhDVisiting Professor, Vrije University, Brussels, Belgium
Richard Quinton, MA MB BChir MDConsultant Endocrinologist, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals & Senior Lecturer, Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

BMC Endocrine Disorders has published this Collection on Endocrinology of reproduction and pregnancy. Advancing our understanding about hormonal regulation of reproduction and pregnancy is of prime importance, given that the reproduction capacity of the human species is reduced worldwide due to environmental factors, more and more women delaying pregnancy for later in life, and conditions such as gestational diabetes mellitus and thyroid disorders, which collectively affect almost 30 % of pregnant women.

We welcomed topics ranging from the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of hormonal regulation in health and disease to the description of novel treatment regimes, and the proposition of more effective, accessible and equitable management of endocrine disorders of reproduction and pregnancy.

Kerri Devine: ST6 Diabetes and Endocrinology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Kerri Devine is a specialty trainee in diabetes and endocrinology in the North East of England, with an interest in reproductive endocrinology. She is completing a PhD at Newcastle University investigating the role of membrane transporters in steroid hormone transport, with Brian Walker, Rebecca Reynolds and Simon Pearce, which includes work on transplacental steroid transfer and regulation of the HPA axis. She has close links with the Society for Endocrinology, having previously sat on the Early Career Steering Group, and helped organise the inaugural SfE-sponsored early career conference (EPIC) in July 2022.

Panagiotis Drakopoulos MD, PhD: Visiting Professor, Vrije University, Brussels, Belgium

Prof Panagiotis Drakopoulos is recognized as a subspecialist in reproductive medicine and surgery by ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) and EBCOG (European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynecology). He holds a Ph.D. in reproductive medicine from the University of Brussels (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and he is a visiting Professor at the University since 2019. He also works in private, and his office is found in Athens, Greece. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed papers. His research is focused on poor responders and ovarian stimulation strategies.

Richard Quinton, MA MB BChir MDConsultant Endocrinologist, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals & Senior Lecturer, Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Dr Quinton graduated in Medicine from Cambridge University in 1988. Following core medical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and Erasmus University Hospital, Rotterdam (where AJ van der Lely and WW de herder were fellow Residents), he completed Endocrinology training at UCL Hospitals, London and then defended his doctoral thesis with honours at Cambridge University in 2000. He is an ESE member, with a longstanding interest in male and female hypogonadism, having published over 200 articles in the area, including several in NEJM, JCI and PNAS. He has always been active in postgraduate training in Endocrinology and remains in close contact with a great many of his former Fellows in the UK and across the world, some of whom are now full Professors. He is Treasurer of the Section of Endocrinology of UEMS and has been a member of its European Exam group since its inception.
