Changing health needs and utilization in China: evidence from National Health Services Survey from 1993 to 2018

China conducts a National Health Services Survey (NHSS) every five years starting in 1993. The 6 rounds of NHSS have revealed the vast changes in healthcare needs, demands and utilization of the 1.4 billion Chinese population along with rapid social economic transition over 25 years. The findings from NHSS have played a vital role in setting the health system reform agenda and health planning, and as an important data source to evaluate the effectiveness of health system reform. 

This special collection in International Journal for Equity in Health, based on the 6 rounds of NHSS over 25 years, will illustrate how the NHSS as an integrated part of the national health information system can track the changing healthcare needs and demands, inform health policy making, and measure China’s progress towards aching Universal Health Coverage. The China NHSS findings can provide valuable information on the development of health and health system, especially for countries in socio-economic transition.
