BMC Research Notes is calling for submissions for a Collection focused on advancements and additions to research techniques used in data capture, integration, classification, and liberation. Small changes to a method can produce huge improvements in research efficiency and reproducibility, while new, innovative techniques have the potential to reshape an entire research field.  We'd like to share your advances in methods with the scientific community, to help improve their research and your own.

Ivan Miguel Serrano Pires, Ph.D.Universidade da Beira Interior, Portugal

Ivan Miguel Pires received a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco in 2010. He obtained his M.Sc. and European Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) in 2012 and 2018, respectively. Between February 2019 and September 2019, he frequented a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at C4 - Cloud Computing Competence Centre (UBI), related to Passing Cloud. The subject was conveyed to sensors embedded on mobile devices to monitor traffic warning situations by car. He was an Invited Adjunct Professor at Polytechnic Institute of Viseu between October 2019 and September 2021. Furthermore, he was an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro between October 2021 and July 2022. His main interests are the application of data fusion and classification techniques of the data acquired from the sensors available in mobile devices for different areas.

About the collection

It is estimated that a staggering 2.5 quintillion (2.5x1018) bytes of data are generated across the globe daily, more than any human could hope to process across several lifetimes. Solutions to managing this torrent of information lie with a suite of ever-advancing methods to help collect, order and share data across different user bases as rapidly and efficiently as possible. This Collection, part of a series focused on Advancing Methods, seeks to showcase the myriad of improvements and additions to research techniques used to help improve the capture, integration classification and liberation of data.

We welcome Research Note articles addressing:

  • Novel or improved data capture methods
  • Better processes for data classification and contextualization
  • Methods for integrating data from a variety of sources
  • Improving automatic tagging of data and identifying sensitive information
  • Methods for recognizing relationships between data
  • More efficient ways for users to view and export their data

Commentaries discussing:

  • The history and future of a significant technique or methodology
  • New or Scientifically challenging techniques and their potential
  • Controversial aspects of these methods and how they can be addressed
