BMC Surgery is calling for submissions to the Collection on 'Bariatric surgery', focusing on recent advancements including new procedures, personalized treatment, postoperative complications, and weight loss after surgery, etc. Obesity is associated with many chronic diseases which could be life-threatening. These conditions can be greatly attenuated after weight loss. Bariatric/metabolic surgery has been well accepted by morbid obese patients as an effective and safe approach. It can fundamentally solve the problem of food intake and nutrient absorption by rebuilding the gastrointestinal and digestive system.

Arda Isik: Istanbul Medeniyet University, Turkey

Prof Arda Isik is a qualified general surgeon who has been granted FEBS and FACS certifications. He has successfully performed over 5,000 operations and conducted 50,000 clinical examinations. The majority of these operations were carried out using minimally invasive techniques, primarily for breast-, thyroid-, gastric-, and colon cancer cases. Prof Isik's research interests lie in experimental surgery, particularly ischemia-reperfusion models involving oxidative agents and burn models.

Dr Imtiaz Wani works as a Consultant Surgeon at Government Gousia Hospital, Directorate of Health Services, in Srinagar, Kashmir, India. He obtained his Master of Surgery degree from SMHS Hospital, GMC Srinagar. Dr Wani specializes in laparoscopic-, gastrointestinal-, hepatobiliary surgery, hernia repair, and emergency surgery. His primary focus is on elective and emergency gastrointestinal surgery, as well as keeping up with the latest technological innovations in minimally invasive surgery. He has received numerous international awards in recognition of his dedication to the field of surgery.


About the collection

Obesity is associated with many chronic diseases which could be life-threatening. These conditions can be greatly attenuated after weight loss. For people with moderate obesity, weight loss through diet and exercise is possible. However, it is very hard to sustain weight loss for people with class III obesity without aggressive intervention. Bariatric/metabolic surgery has been adopted in clinics for about 70 years, and it has been well accepted by morbid obese patients as an effective and safe approach. It can fundamentally solve the problem of food intake and nutrient absorption by rebuilding the gastrointestinal and digestive system. 
To discuss recent advancements in bariatric surgery, we have decided to launch a BMC Surgery collection, “Bariatric surgery”. We invite submissions from all aspects of this developing field including, but not limited to:

  • new procedures
  • personalized treatment
  • postoperative complications
  • sustain weight loss after surgery
