Maria Eugenia Inda-Webb, PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA

Dr. Maria Eugenia Inda-Webb is working in the Synthetic Biology Center at MIT engineering living materials to diagnose disorders in the gut, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Since 2018, she serves in the MIT CommLab and has started and leads the MIT Microbiome Journal club. She is the 2023 Award for Early Career Environmental Research — American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the 2020 Langer Fellow for Innovation and Entrepreneurial Excellence — American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the 2015 EMBO/EMBL SynBio-poster award and the ASM's first Agar Art contest award (2015). Outside the lab, she loves capturing beauty with her Nikon D3400 camera.

About the Collection

The global community is facing an urgent need to transition towards sustainable practices across various sectors to combat environmental challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and pollution. Within this context, the development and utilization of biobased materials have emerged as a promising avenue for creating a more sustainable future. Biobased materials, derived from renewable resources such as biomass, microorganisms, and agricultural byproducts, have the potential to reduce the ecological footprint of traditional materials and pave the way for a more sustainable and circular economy. Biotechnological advancements are at the forefront of this transformation. Through biotechnology, it is possible to harness the power of biological processes, such as fermentation, genetic engineering, and enzymatic transformations, to produce, modify, and process biobased materials with improved performance and reduced environmental impact. This special issue aims to explore the diverse biotechnological pathways and applications driving the development of biobased materials and their role in ensuring a sustainable future.

Authors are encouraged to submit original research articles, comprehensive reviews, in-depth case studies, and insightful opinion pieces that align closely with the aim and scope of this special issue. This special issue will cover different topics related to advancements in biotechnological routes for sustainable materials, but not limited, to the following issues:

  • Bioprocessing and fermentation techniques for biobased materials.
  • Material properties enhancement through genetic engineering.
  • Mechanical and thermal properties of biobased materials.
  • Advanced analytical techniques for biobased material characterization.
  • Life cycle assessments and circular economy of biobased materials.
  • Biobased materials for medical and healthcare applications.
  • Application in renewable energy production and storage technologies.
  • Biobased materials for sustainable packaging and construction.
  • Social and economic impacts of biobased materials transition.
