BMC Cardiovascular Disorders has published this Collection on Cerebrovascular Disorders. Cerebrovascular disorders comprise a range of distinct pathologies, including ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, transient ischaemic attack, and other intracranial vascular disorders (e.g. vascular malformations and unruptured aneurysms), and significantly increase the risk of vascular dementia. Cerebrovascular disorders represent a significant medical and economic challenge which is anticipated to increase in parallel with a global ageing population. The past decade has brought great progress in diagnostic and therapeutic options but more needs to be done to improve the life of patients. Advances in basic science techniques and medical technologies hold great potential to improve the management of cerebrovascular disorders in the coming decades; however, rigorously designed translational research programs are needed to bring novel discoveries to the clinic.

Alessandra Granata: University of Cambridge, UK

Alessandra Granata is a Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge with more than 10 years experience in modeling disease using human induced pluripotent stem cells. She joined the Stroke research group, department of Clinical Neurosciences in 2016 and established a translational research group that uses induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) derived from patients with genetic form of cerebral small vessel diseases and stroke to investigate underlying pathogenic mechanisms.
 

Eric Harshfield: University of Cambridge, UK

Dr Harshfield is a Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge. He received his PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge in 2018. His research uses genetics and multi-omics to identify improved ways to predict, prevent, and treat stroke and dementia.
 

Joseph V Moxon: James Cook University, Australia

Joe Moxon is a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Dean, Research at the James Cook University College of Medicine and Dentistry. Joe’s research focuses on identifying novel treatments, biomarkers and risk factors for vascular disease, using a range of laboratory and clinical approaches. Joe was the lead statistician on several published randomised controlled trials investigating novel treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and is a chief investigator for ongoing trials focusing on AAA, lower limb atherosclerosis and diabetic foot complications. Most recently Joe has collaborated with clinicians involved in the care of ischaemic stroke patients, to identify novel stroke diagnostics and prognostics.

This collection in BMC Cardiovascular Disorders explores the spectrum from translational basic science to clinical research which aim to improve our understanding of cerebrovascular disorders.
