BMC Chemistry has published this Collection on future fuels. Developing cleaner, greener, and more efficient fuels is key to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and reducing the damaging impact of human activity on the environment. We believe that the primary source of these vital innovations will come from new discoveries across the field of chemistry.

Jun Mei: Queensland University of Technology, Australia

Jun Mei received his Ph.D. from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT, Australia) in 2019. He is now a Lecturer at the School of Chemistry and Physics (QUT) and an Investigator at the Centre for Materials Science of QUT. His major research topics include the rational design of advanced nanomaterials for energy storage (e.g., rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors) and green catalysis (e.g., electrocatalysis and environmental remediation). He has published over 40 journal articles and is an associate editor for Frontiers in Energy Research and an editorial board member for 6 materials science and energy chemistry journals. He has received several prestigious awards (e.g., QLD Fresh Scientist) and holds memberships in several famous associations (e.g., AAAS and MRS).

Patricia G. VazquezNational University of La Plata, Argentina
Patricia Vázquez obtained her doctorate from the University of San Luis, Argentina. She works as an Associate Professor in the Exact Sciences faculty at the National University of La Plata and is a principal researcher at CONICET in Argentina. She has published over 110 scientific articles, 10 book chapters, and 6 academic books in her 30-year career. She has obtained over 50 research grants to support her activities and received 10 awards for her high-hierarchy research results. Her main research areas are circular economy, nanoparticles, biomaterials and advanced materials for catalysts, and pharmacy, among others.

About the collection

BMC Chemistry has published this Collection on future fuels. 

Developing cleaner, greener, and more efficient fuels is vital to reducing our reliance on dwindling fossil fuel resources and reducing the negative impact of human activity on the environment. 

To succeed, any new fuel must compete with the existing fossil fuel-based energy sources in terms of cost, efficiency, and reliability. Such fuels will need to be produced at scale without damage to the environment and ideally be compatible with existing infrastructure such as engines, pipelines, and storage tanks.

The solutions to many of these challenges lie with various innovations across chemistry, helping to develop new, sustainable fuel sources or improving the efficiency of existing ones. These solutions range from novel biofuels, fuel cells, and photo-voltaic materials to catalyst-based carbon capture and utilization.

In support of SDG12 (Affordable, clean energy for all), BMC Chemistry published this collection, which welcomed submissions addressing the following:

●    Fuel cells, e.g., Microbial fuel, gas layer, alkaline fuel cells, phosphoric acid, proton exchange membrane, molten carbonate, solid oxide, or hydrogen fuel cells
●    Electrochemical and photocatalytic energy conversion 
●    Green hydrogen 
●    Synthetic methane, synthetic methanol, or synthetic ammonia
●    Alternative catalysts for future fuels
●    Methods to upscale the production of such fuels in an efficient and sustainable manner

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Guest Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Guest Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
