Call for papers - Liver transplantation

BMC Surgery is calling for submissions to our Collection on 'Liver transplantation', with a focus on tracking the recent developments that improve surgical safety and success rates, while reducing the postoperative complications. We welcome submissions of research works and review works on topics including but not limited to adopting minimally invasive techniques in practice, improvements in liver preservation techniques, intraoperative hemodynamic management, refinement of surgical procedures, and perioperative infection risk control.

Sami Akbulut: Inonu University, Turkey

Prof Akbulut completed his General Surgery residency at Baskent University and received specialized training in liver transplantation under Prof Mehmet Haberal. He furthered his career at Diyarbakır Research & Training Hospital. In 2012, he joined the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and followed with the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2013. He joined Inonu University Liver Transplant Institute in 2014 with a fellowship and attained a professorship in 2020. He recently earned a PhD in Public Health and appointed as an associate professor in the same field. With over 500 hepatectomies (donor hepatectomy, tumour surgery, benign liver disease, etc.) conducted, Prof Akbulut specializes in gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder surgery for malignant and benign cases, including living donor hepatectomy. Consecutively over the past two years, he has achieved remarkable success, securing a position on Stanford University's list of the world's most influential scientists.

Gianluca Rompianesi: Federico II University Hospital, Italy                                                                                                                                  
Prof Rompianesi is currently a consultant  Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and Transplant Surgeon and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Federico II University Hospital of Naples, Italy. He is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery of the divisions of Transplantation and of HPB surgery and a Board Member of the Young Professionals of Transplantation of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT). Prof Rompianesi worked as a Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB and Transplant Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals, where also served as Senior Clinical Lecturer in General Surgery at the University of Oxford, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Royal Free Hospital, and Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital. Prof Rompianesi's special interests lie in the fields of living donor transplantation and minimally invasive HPB surgery, with particular emphasis on the application of novel technologies in surgery.


About the Collection

BMC Surgery is calling for submissions to our Collection on 'Liver transplantation'.

Liver transplantation is one of the most effective therapies for end-stage liver disease. It has rapidly developed in recent years, while there are still many difficulties and challenges. The surgery is very complicated and time-consuming. To ensure a successful surgery and to improve the patient's outcome, surgeons need to solve many problems such as extensive surgical trauma and postoperative infection.

In order to track the recent developments to improve safety of the surgery and success rate and to reduce postoperative complications as well, we have launched a collection on liver transplantation. We invite submissions of research works and review works on topics including but not limited to:

  • Adopting minimally invasive techniques in practice.
  • Improvements in liver preservation techniques.
  • Intraoperative hemodynamic management.
  • Refinement of surgical procedures.
  • Perioperative infection risk control.

This Collection welcomes submission of original Research and Review Articles.
