Biotechnology for Biofuels and Bioproducts is calling for submissions to our Collection on Microbiota for Future Sustainable Bioproduction. The last three decades have witnessed advances in engineering individual microbes to produce chemicals and materials. However, engineering microbial consortia has lagged. Recent technological innovation in synthetic biology has facilitated the development of experimental and computational tools that enable microbiome engineering. Given the complexity of global problems that are difficult to solve using a single microbe, microbiota engineering is likely to be a future solution to climate crisis, pollution, food inequality, food shortage, biosecurity, biosafety, and sustainable bioproduction of medicines, chemicals, fuels, and materials. This topical collection covers synthetic biology approaches to address these global problems as well as associated issues such as biosafety and biosecurity when the microbiota is engineered.

Prof. Moon is an EBRC council member, the Moonshot Bio founder, and the SynBYSS chair. He aims to solve global agricultural, environmental, manufacturing, and health problems through engineering biology. His research projects have been supported by Gates Foundation and 10 different US agencies (21 external grants), and he has secured >$10M ($35M for the entire teams since 7/1/2012). These projects and his prior efforts have resulted in 71 publications, 118 invited talks, and 10 patents. His achievements have also been recognized with awards, including a Langer Prize, a B&B Daniel I.C. Wang Award, an NSF CAREER award, an ONR Young Investigator Award, a John C. Sluder Fellowship (MIT) to name some.
