Moran Amit: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA

Moran  Amit,  MD,  PhD  is  a  head  and  neck  surgeon  in  the  Department  of  Head  and  Neck  Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and has an active research laboratory focusing on cancer-related neurogenesis and axonogenesis and on the role of neuro-immunology in cancer. One exciting finding of Dr. Amit’s lab involved describing a mechanism by which head and neck tumors  can  reprogram  adrenergic  signaling  in  neurons  and  the  effect  of  targeting  the  peripheral nervous system on cancer initiation and progression. This will serve as a basis for combining treatments targeting the nervous system with other therapies, such as immunotherapy, in the treatment of head
and  neck  cancers.  Dr.  Amit  is  continuing  his  work  by  building  a  team  to  study  how  the  neural microenvironment  affects  responses  to  chemotherapy  and  immunotherapy  in  patients  with  non-melanoma skin cancer and other cancers, and to develop novel strategies to combat resistance to these therapies.

Chirag B. Patel: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA

Chirag Patel, MD, PhD is an assistant professor of neuro-oncology and McNair Scholar at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He sees patients with cancers of the brain and spinal cord, as well as  patients  with  neurological  complications  of  cancer  and  cancer  therapies.  His  lab  studies  electric fields-based cancer therapies and the interactions between the central nervous system and cancer.

About the collection

BMC Neuroscience is calling for submissions to our collection on Neuroregulation of Cancer

Emerging evidence suggests that the nervous system and its normal functions may be dysregulated by cancer, specifically, in a manner that benefits tumor proliferation and migration. Neuroregulation may serve as an emerging hallmark of cancer. Importantly, such neuroregulation may take place by the central nervous system (e.g., in the setting of glioma or brain metastases) or peripheral nervous system (e.g., in the setting of cancers outside of the brain and spinal cord). The purpose of this collection in BMC Neuroscience is to highlight the most recent advances in the field of cancer neuroregulation. We invite the submission of manuscripts summarizing original work in any aspect of the field (pre-clinical or clinical), ranging from model system development to novel diagnostics to therapeutics that leverage the nervous system to improve tumor control.

Submission Guidelines

This Collection welcomes submission of Research Articles. Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure you have read our submission guidelines. Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system SNAPP. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection, please select "Neuroregulation of Cancer" from the dropdown menu.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Guest Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Guest Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
