This Thematic Series is published in the Journal of Intensive Care.
This thematic series focus on the oxygen therapy for the critically ill patients and consist of four narrative reviews. Obviously, every therapeutic intervention has its advantages and disadvantages. From this standpoint, several editorials written on this issue use “friend or foe” or “face of Janus” in their title [1,2].
The first article of this thematic series focuses on this issue and provided the framework about the biological effects of oxygen. Other three reviews covers on specific situations such as postoperative patients, the patients with ARDS and post-cardiac arrest patients. The editor believes that these reviews provide up-to-date information about this topic and help readers determine the optimal target and methods of oxygen administration. Additional editorials about this topic have recently been published and the editor would like to invite the interested readers to read these articles as well [3,4].
