Hirak K Patra, PhD, FRSB, FHEA, FIBMS, Department of Surgical Biotechnology, UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences, University College London, UK

Professor Hirak K Patra is among the next generation of scientists with cross-discipline interests, and is serving as a full (Chair) Professor of Precision Nanosystems and Advanced Therapeutics at the University College London (UCL), UK. He is an expert in nanomedicine and regenerative medicine. Before moving to UCL from Cambridge, Hirak was a fellow (Jr, B1) at the Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge, and he implemented his EU Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual European Fellowship at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge. Prof Patra has published his research in more than 50 articles, holds granted US patents, and has edited 3 books and special issues in several journals.

Agata Przekora, PhD, Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Medical University of Lublin, Poland

Professor Agata Przekora, PhD is a Polish biotechnologist and materials scientist. She obtained her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2014. She takes up the position of full professor and the head of the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of Medical University of Lublin (Poland). Her study focuses on the development of novel biomaterials for regenerative medicine applications. She has also developed many unique protocols for the preclinical evaluation of biomaterials under in vitro conditions, limiting the use of animal models in scientific research. She is the author/co-author of 12 patents and 89 publications with a total score of IF = 443.277 (Hirsch Index = 26).

Richard Schäfer, MD, FRSB, Medical Director Transfusion Medicine, Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy, Medical Center, University of Freiburg, Germany

After graduating in medicine at Heidelberg University (Medical Faculty Mannheim), Professor Richard Schäfer, MD, FRSB was clinically trained in internal medicine and transfusion medicine. In his scientific career he has been working extensively in the mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) fields at Harvard, Stanford, Tübingen, Frankfurt and Freiburg Universities, where he developed and pursued a research program focusing on functional heterogeneity of stem cells and cell therapeutics. He headed the Department for Cell Therapeutics at the Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology at Frankfurt University, and since 2021 he is the Medical Director Transfusion Medicine at the Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Gene Therapy at Freiburg University, where he is also leading the Freiburg iPSC core facility. Prof Schäfer has served in various positions in professional societies in the fields of transfusion medicine, biotherapies and stem cells including Secretary of the AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies). He has authored/co-authored more than 100 publications (cumulative IF>400; Hirsch Index =31).

About the Collection

BMC Medicine is calling for submissions to our Collection on Regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine holds the promise of revolutionizing healthcare by manipulating the body's inherent capacity for self-renewal and repair. The potential to engineer functional tissues, modulate immune responses, and unlock the full regenerative potential of the human body offers exciting prospects for personalized medicine and improved patient outcomes. Stem cell therapies, for instance, have demonstrated remarkable regenerative capabilities, providing hope for conditions with limited treatment options such as spinal cord injuries, type 1 diabetes, neurodegeneration, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer and osteoarthritis. As we delve deeper into the intricacies of regenerative processes, we are laying the groundwork for a future where regenerative medicine plays an increasingly integral role in both therapeutic and preventative treatment.

This Collection aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of regenerative medicine, spanning from foundational cellular and molecular mechanisms to translational applications and clinical breakthroughs. Methodological considerations to improve robustness, reproducibility, and validation in regenerative biomedicine are particularly welcomed. We encourage submissions covering a wide array of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Stem cell biology: Advances in translational research, pluripotent and multipotent stem cells, tissue-specific stem cells
  • Bioengineering and biomaterials: Novel biomaterials for regenerative applications, scaffold design and optimization, biocompatible and bioactive materials. Only biomaterial studies demonstrating translational potential in vivo are considered for peer-review.
  • Genetic and epigenetic regulation: Genome editing technologies, epigenetic modulation in regeneration, genetic programming of cell therapies
  • Clinical applications: Regenerative disease therapies , stem cell-based interventions, xenotransplantion, clinical trials and patient-reported outcomes
  • Immunomodulation in regeneration: Immune response in regenerative processes; immunomodulatory strategies, immunological challenges and solutions
  • Emerging technologies: Organoids and 3D bioprinting, artificial intelligence in regenerative medicine, nanotechnology for regenerative applications

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good health and well-being.

Submission Guidelines

BMC Medicine encourages submissions of front matter articles and original research, including clinical trials (phase I-III, randomized-controlled, either positive or negative trials), epidemiological studies (retrospective or prospective), systematic reviews and meta-analyses, -omics, medical imaging, genomics studies and biomarkers research. Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure you have read our submission guidelines.

Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Snapp. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection; please select "Regenerative medicine" from the dropdown menu.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
