Advances in medical robotics and automation for surgery and rehabilitation

Medical robotics in the last few decades has achieved rapid development and has been widely applied in surgical field. The types of medical robotics include neurosurgery robotics, orthopedics robotics, laparoscopic robotics, vascular interventional robotics, prosthetics and exoskeleton robotics, assistive and rehabilitation robotics and capsule robotics. The robotics are important for surgery. Key technological research in medical robotics and automation is now very essential.

Minimally invasive surgery based on surgical robotics can decrease recovery time, speed healing and reduce scarring. The establishment of the minimally invasive surgical concept and the technological development and application of minimally invasive devices has greatly enhanced the efficacy of surgical operations. Besides, the robotic also has many applications after operation. In recent years, with the rapid development of robotics, we can achieve minimally invasive incision, exposure and surgical procedure. Surgical robotics has indeed become a new growth point and technological incubator in the modern surgery.

This special issue presents knowledge of medical robotics, minimally invasive surgical instrumentation, robotic mechanics, and applications of the robot-assisted medical imaging in minimally invasive surgery.
