In 1999 we pioneered sustainable open access publishing. But we didn’t shout about it, we preferred to concentrate on creating and testing new and innovative ways to help authors. Our pilot projects became open research standards.
That same inventive spirit inspires us to this day. Always questioning, always listening, always progressing; for us innovation is an attitude not an activity.
And now we're becoming BMC.
BMC, research is always in progress.
I am proud to be the Chief Editor of a BMC journal. For the scientific community that Genome Biology serves, BMC's pioneering and ongoing commitment to openness and innovation is key, as is the focus on research integrity.
To me, the new visual look reflects the way that BMC remains true to its roots, yet steadily evolves to meet the changing needs of researchers.

BMC reflects our growth beyond biology and medicine, to support interdisciplinary collaboration and the global research community.
Our new look better represents the dynamism and innovation of our people and the research communities we serve.
We will continue to make improvements to our website and launch new products and services to make life easier for our authors and readers.
In all of this we will stay totally committed to open access and true to our core principles.
We are committed to serving the needs of our communities. We listen to your feedback to make our processes and services better, help our authors to connect with potential collaborators, and work continually to help you achieve your goals.

It’s not just our identity and website that have evolved; we have refreshed how our journals look too. This includes both our own journals and those that we publish on behalf of societies.
Having staged an early preview of some of our BMC web pages and gathered positive users’ feedback, we officially launched our refreshed website in 2017. As always, it is work in progress, so please view the new version of our site and leave us your feedback.
You can visit our new Explore Journals, Get Published and About BMC pages, BMC Flagship journals (Genome Biology, Genome Medicine, BMC Biology, BMC Medicine) and BMC Series journals, as well as an early version of our BMC homepage. We have now initiated the process to refresh our academic journals sites.
The improvements to our website will take place in stages over the next months. This will keep disruption to our services to an absolute minimum.
